While on the hunt for a new digital camera I narrowed it down to the Canon Ixus 100 IS or this, the Samsung PL60. After much analysing of all the stats and having a fiddle with both I opted for the Samsung. Here's why:
- Resolution: Although the Ixus pumps out 12mp compared to 10.2 on the PL60 there is no way i'm going to need that extra bit. If all i'm ever going to do is pop my pictures on Social Network sites and have 6x4 hard prints there is no need for anything over 3mp. I have it set at 5mp and i'm happy as larry. (That gives me over 300 shots on a 1GB SD)
- Optical Zoom: The Ixus has a measly 3x zoom where as the PL60 comes with 5x built in.
- Size: The Ixus is slightly smaller that the PL60 but this is small enough for my liking anyway. You're looking at a few millimeters bigger than a credit card, the depth is abough a third of a credit card's length.
- LCD Screen: The screen on the PL60 is 2.7" compared to the Canon's 2.5", enough said.
- Price: You can pick up a PL60 for just over £110, a Canon Ixus 100 IS will set you back £190. I'd rather keep the £80 thank you.
- USB Charging: This was the killer selling point. You do not have to pop out the battery and stick it in a charger. The camera charges directly from the USB port, so you can charge and transfer the images at the same time. Supplied is a mains adaptor with USB slot so you can charge when away from a computer as well.
All in all I cannot recommend this camera enough, it is quiet, responsive and fast. A definate buy.
